Pan Am Jr boys 4x400m relay squad take bronze

TRINIDAD and Tobago earned bronze in the boys 4x400-metre relay at the Pan American Junior Championships in Trujillo, Peru, yesterday.

The quartet of Zidan Martin, Judah Taylor, Terry Frederick and Jacob St Clair stopped the clock in three minutes, 10.36 seconds (3:10.36) to finish third. USA won the event in 3:00.33 and Jamaica took silver in 3:03.77. 

TT athlete Tyra Gittens missed a bronze medal by seven points in the girls heptathlon. Gittens gathered 5,230 points in the seven-discipline event to finish in fourth position. 

Cuban Adriana Rodriguez Fuentes won gold with 5,733 points, followed by American Ariel Okorie with 5,253 points and Canadian Dallyssa Huggins with 5,237 points. 

Gittens was not as successful on day two of the heptathlon. In the long jump she finished third with a 5.78-metre leap and earned 783 points before faltering in the javelin and 800m events. In the javelin, Gittens got 514 points after finishing eighth with a throw of 31.95m and finished seventh in the 800m in 2:40.41 to earn 568 points. 

On Saturday, Gittens was second in her 100m hurdles heat, second overall in the high jump, fifth overall in the shot put and first in her 200m heat. Gittens won bronze in the girls long jump event with a 6.22m leap on Friday. 

In the boys shot put final, Konnel Jacob finished 11th with a top heave of 16.30m. Winning gold was American Jordan Geist with a 22.02m attempt, Jamaican Kevin Nedrick took silver with a 20.34m effort and American Adrian Piperi earned bronze with a 20.26m attempt. 

Jacob was ninth in the men's discus final on Friday. 

TT finished with four medals - one gold and three bronze. Khalifa St Fort won gold in the girls 100m, while the boys 4x100m relay team, the boys 4x400m relay team and Gittens in the girls long jump all snatched bronze.
