Cox, Nero victorious at RBC 15K

VETERANS Curtis Cox and Tonya Nero were first to the finish line in the 15K Run, in the male and female divisions respectively, as RBC Royal Bank staged its inaugural RBC Race for the Kids at the Queen's Park Savannah, Port of Spain, yesterday.

Cox completed the 15K course, which began at the top of Woodford Street and finished opposite Queen's Royal College, in 52 minutes 11 seconds. Nero clocked one hour one minute 34 seconds.

In the 5K Walk/Run Matthew Hagley placed first among the males in a time of 16 minutes three seconds, while Aaliyah Mitchell won the female division in 20 minutes 58 seconds.

More than 1,600 runners faced the starter in RBC Race for the Kids in the bank's concerted efforts to raise funds to assist children afflicted with cancer.

"We are thrilled with the tremendous turnout, especially the great number kids as these efforts are aimed at helping the children.

We heartily thank our corporate participants and our RBC team and all who played their part in support of this cause.

At RBC, it's what we do year-round to make a difference in people's lives and to enable communities to thrive and prosper," said RBC Royal Bank Managing Director, Darryl White, who himself completed the 5K.

The Trinidad and Tobago Race for the Kids supports the RBC Caribbean Children's Cancer Fund and is the latest addition to the global RBC charitable runs which support children's causes in several parts of the world.

Brian Lewis, president of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTO C), who was at the event, lauded RBC Royal Bank for its initiative in "using sport as a vehicle to accomplish a worthy cause".

He said, "the entire RBC team, their corporate supporters, as well as all the participants and supporters, must be complimented for demonstrating the power of sport to achieve good." A special cheer went up for Roy Riley, aged 80, of South Oropouche, who came first in the 15K Run in the 70- year and over category (male). Also receiving applause was six-year old Zariah Pascall, a student of Arima Girls' RC, who placed third in the Under 19 division of the female 5K Walk/Run.
