Thomas fifth in CAC men’s 110m hurdles

USA-based Mikel Thomas failed to add to T&T’s ten medals at the 22nd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games when comeptition continued at the Hiberto Jara Athletic Stadium, Veracruz, Mexico, yesterday. Thomas, who turned 27 on Sunday last, ended in fifth spot in the men’s 110m hurdles in 13.83, well behind Cuban duo, Yordan Luis Ofarrill (13.46) and Jhoanis Carlos Portilla (13.53) and Barbadian Greggmar Swift (13.59) and US Virgin Islands’ Eddie Lovett (13.79).

The other finishers were Mexico’s Genaro Rodriguez (14.04) and Jamaican Eric Keddo (14.53) while Haitian Jeffrey Michael Julmis did not finish. In the semifinals on Thursday, Thomas advanced to the men’s 110m hurdles final carded for 12.55pm today, when he placed third in semifinal one with a time of 14.08 to trial Cuban Yordan Luis Ofarrill (13.63) and US Virgin Islands’ Eddie Lovett (13.82). Fourth placed Jamaican, Eric Keddo (14.18) qualified as the fastest loser. The qualifiers for the gold medal event from semifinal two were Barbadian Greggmar Swift (13.62), Cuban Jhoanis Carlos Portilla (13.74), Haitian Jeffrey Michael Julmis (14.02) and Mexican Genaro Rodriguez (14.03).

So far T&T has won two gold medals through Cleopatra Borel (shot put) and George Bovell III (swimming), while the nnational men’s hockey team got silver and Dorian Alexander (taekwondo), Curtis Humphreys/Dexter St Louis (table tennis), Roger Daniel (shooting), Christopher George (judo), Kwesi Browne (cycling), Bovell (swimming) and boxer Michael Alexander added bronze.

Lewis fifth in men’s sailing

Olympic sailor, Andrew Lewis placed fifth overall in the men’s Opening Series Race after he was seventh as well in the tenth and final race for an overall tally of 49 points, 14 behind bronze medallist Enrique Arathoon of El Salvador (35) while Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Perdomo was fourth with 39.

Taking gold was Guatemala’s Juan Maegli after he secured a five first place finishes and four runners-up spot for 13 points while US Virgin Islands’ Chris Thompson got silver with 20 points. And in the women’s laser radial, Kelly-Ann Arrindell had a creditable seventh placed finish in her tenth race to end ninth overall with 73 points.

The winner overall was Aruban Phillipne Van Aanholt with 17 points while Venezuela’s Daniela Rivera (25) and Guatemalan, Andrea Aldana (27) took silver and bronze.

Beach vball women stopped in quarters

T&T’s Nancy Joseph and Ayanna Dyette had their gold medal quest in the women’s beach volleyball stopped by Costa Ricans Karen Cope and Natalia Alfaro 13-21, 13-21 at the Reino Magico and will now contest the fifth the eighth playoffs today.

On Thursday night in their Women’s Pool F decdier, Joseph and Dyette were beaten by host duo and tournament favourites, Mexicans Bibiana Candelas and Martha Revuelta 6-21, 13-21.

In their two other pool matches, the T&T women rallied for a 21-17, 18-21, 15-8 win over Hondurans Marissa Brady and Christianne Etches, and followed up by beating Barbadians, Anicia Wood and Shari Matthews 21-19, 21-17 to seal a quarterfinal spot.

And, in the men’s tournament, Toco-born duo, Fabien Whitfield and Daneil Williams won their ninth to 16th spot quarterfinal against Costa Ricans, Julio Cesar Alvarez and Diego Armando Alpizar by default to set up a meeting today with for ninth to 12th position.

Earlier in the round-robin Pool A matches, Whitfield and Williams suffered a key loss to El Salvadoreans David Vargas and Carlos Escobar 16-21, 21-16, 12-15 before by beating Jamaicans Ryck Webb-Mc Kenzie and Christopher Walters 21-10, 21-11 in their second match.

However, they then went under 15-21, 9-21 to Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Erick Haddock 9-21, 6-21 to miss the quarterfinals

Ruggermen rough up Venezuela, Costa Rica

At the High Performance Centre, Joseph Quashie and Jesse Richards scored a try each while Christopher Hudson made both conversions as the T&T ruggermen stopped Venezuela 14-5 after being ahead 5-0 at the interval in their Pool A round-robin opener.

The local men then followed up with a more offensive display in beating Costa Rica 27-10 with Wayne kelly scoring two tries.

The trio of James Phillip, Quashie and Darrel Scott added one each for the winners who held a 12-5 advantage at the half, while Keishon Walker scored on a conversion. Last night, T&T faced Mexico ahead of today’s start of the knockout matches involving all eigtht countries.

In the women’s competition, T&T women were drubbed by Colombia 5-36 with Nicolette Panthor scoring the lone try after trailing 5-19 at the half.

Nicole Acevedo had two tries for the South Americans while Sharon Acevdeo, Guadalupe Lopez, Cindy Delgado and Claudia Betancur scored one try each, while Maria Lopera added two conversions and Betancur, one.

However, in their, T&T women showed more grit and rallied from 0-5 down at the half to earn a 10-10 draw with Jamaica.

This was thanks to tries from Panthor and Dalia Jordan-Brown. For the Jamaicans Wendy Parchment and Sasha-Gay Green scored the tries.

T&T faced Mexico women last night and today with meet Cayman Islands and Venezuela in their remaing round-robin matches at the end of which, the top two will contest the gold medal match and third and fourth play for bronze.

Squash:

At the Racquet Centre, T&T ended with a 1-1 record in Men’s Pool A Team squash competition following a 0-3 loss to Mexico and faced Guatemala in the quarterfinals last night.

For the host, Cesar Orlando Salazar defeated T&T’s Colin Ramasra 11-3, 11-5, 11-3, Arturo Isreal Salazar dumped Kale Wilson 11-7, 11-2, 11-4 and Alfredo Manuel Avila overcame N’Ku Patrick 11-2, 11-3, 11-7.

On Thursday in their opener, T&T defeated regional rival Barbados 2-1 in their Men’s Pool A Squad Team battle.

Ramasra got T&T off to a good start beating Gavin Cumberbatch 11-6, 11-4, 11-2 but Rhett Cumberbatch drew the Bajans level via his 11-9, 13-11, 11-1 win over Wilson, before Patrick won by default from Shawn Simpson.

Water Polo: Mexico hands T&T fifth straight loss

T&T’s Russell Ferreira scored a second staright hat-trick but it was not enought as the national water polo men’s team went under 10-19 to host Mexico At the Leyes de Reforma Aquatic Centre

T&T which held a shock 6-5 half-time lead after the first period ended 3-3 also got two goals each from Matthew George and Daniel Abraham while Christopher Forte, Stanley John Littlepage, and Justin Bodden added the others. Mexico, meanwhile got trebles from Armando Gibert, Antonio Avalos, Oliver Alvarez and Perseo Ponce in the win which was powered by its 14-4 second-half outscoring of T&T.

Hermes Ponce found the goal twice while the quintet of Andres Oneto, Fausto Vazquez, Jorge Perez, Armando Garcia and Israel Perez chipped in with one each.

Last night in their final round-robin fixture, T&T faced fellow winless team, Guatemala in a preview to their fifth to sixth placed playoff today.

VBall men Indoor play for fifth

Today the Calypso Spikemen who ended round-robin Pool A play with a 0-3 mark after losing to Mexico, Colombi and Dominican Republic go after a first win in their fifth to eighth spot playoff at the Arena Cordoba from 4pm. The Gideon Dickson-coached T&T men will face the losers of one of last night’s quarterfinal between Mexico/Venezuela, and Cuba/Colombia. Already through to today’s main draw semifinal are pool winners, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic who will meet the winners of the quarterfinals.
