Borel captures second CAC gold

Shot putter Cleopatra Borel made a successful defence of her women’s title at the 22nd Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Mexico, yesterday to give T&T its second gold medal at the Games.

Golden in 2010 in Puerto Rico, 35-year-old Borel was never in trouble of securing the gold medal after her first throw of 17.84 placed her at the top of the field. This was followed by throws of 18.07, 18.38, 18.53 and 18.99 before fouling her final effort.

She joins swimmer George Bovell who won a third straight gold in the men’s 50m freestyle final last week.

T&T’s other medals to date came via the national men’s hockey team (silver), Bovell (swimming), Dorian Alexander (taekwondo), Curtis Humphreys/ Dexter St Louis (table tennis), Roger Daniel (shooting), Christopher George (judo), Kwesi Browne (cycling) and boxer Michael Alexander.

Second placed Cuban Yaniuvis Lopez was also consistent with throws of 17.70, 17.49, 17.65, 17.87 and 17.88 while bronze medallist Sandra Milena Lemos of Colombia, had two successful attempts, first an effort of 16.98 and 17.50 to earn her medal as she fouled on her next four attempts.

In the men’s 200m final, 26-year-old Kyle Greaux was fifth in 20.95, behind the quartet of Cubans Roberto Skyers (20.47) and Reynier Mena (20.54) and Mexico’s Jose Carlos Herrera (20.63) while Honduran Rolando Cruz Palacios was fourth in 20.76.

In Wednesday’s semifinals, Greaux was third in 20.83.

T&T’s other entrant Emmanuel Callender completed a disastrous double after he was disqualified from heat two, to follow up failing to reach the men’s 100m final while US-based Mikel Thomas advanced to the men’s 110m hurdles final carded for 12.55 pm today, when he third in his semifinal (14.08), behind Cuban Yordan Luis Ofarrill (13.63) and US Virgin Islands’ Eddie Lovett (13.82).

Ayanna Alexander, a bronze medallist at this year’s Commonwealth Games, was eighth in the long jump with a longest leap of 12.94 metres and in the men’s 1,500m, Jamaal James was ninth in 4:00.58 minutes, well adrift of Cuban Andy Gonzalez (3:45.52).
