Silver for Walcott

OLYMPIC GOLD medallist Keshorn Walcott battled rainy weather in the finals for the men’s javelin throw, finishing second at the XX Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland yesterday.

The Trinidad and Tobago star took the lead after his first throw of 82.13 metres but that effort was soon passed by Kenya’s Julius Kiplangat Yego with a 83.87m throw to put him in first place. On Walcott’s final throw he improved by 54 centimetres, enough to secure the silver in 82.67m. Australian Hamish Peacock took him the bronze with best throw of 81.75m.

Meanwhile, in the men’s 4x400m relay, TT’s anchor leg Zwede Hewitt was no match for England’s Matthew Hudson-Smith and Chris Brown of the Bahamas who ran past him in the last 200m of the race, forcing Hewitt to settle for the bronze medal crossing the line in three minutes 01.51 seconds, behind England (3:00.46) and Bahamas (3:00.51).

Other members of the TT bronze medal foursome were Lalonde Gordon, Jarrin Solomon and Renny Quow.

In the men’s 4x100m, the TT team of Keston Bledman, Marc Burns, Rondell Sorrillo and Richard Thompson were third in 38.10 behind Jamaica, anchored by the great Usain Bolt. The six-time Olympic champ got the baton in second place but easily passed the English anchorman Danny Talbot to set a news Games record of 37.58 forcing England to settle for silver in 38.02.

The TT women 4x400m relay team failed to secure a medal after finishing sixth in three minutes 33.50 seconds with Jamaica winning gold (3:23.82), followed by Nigeria (3:24.71) and England (3:27.24) settling for bronze.

Unfortunately, the weakened women 4x100m team, with the absence of Michelle Lee-Ahye and Kai Selvon, crossed the line last in 44.78. Jamaica blew away the field winning gold in a new Games record of 41.83 ahead of Nigeria (42.92) and England (43.10) for second and third respectively.

The semi-finals of the women’s netball New Zealand managed to hold of England 35-34 while Australia beat Jamaica 57-42. Australia would face New Zealand today in the finals.

TT ended the games 22nd on the medals table with eight medals, three silver and five bronze.

The first medallist was Ayanna Alexander who copped bronze in the women’s triple jump, followed by Cleopatra Borel — women shot put (silver), Lalonde Gordon — men 400m (bronze), Jehue Gordon — men’s 400m hurdles (silver), Micheal Alexander — boxing (bronze), Keshorn Walcott — men javelin (silver) and the men’s 4x100m and 4x400 (bronze each).

Top
