Top athletes honoured tonight at SOSA Awards
Trinidad Guardian :: 28.12.2013
World 400m hurdles champion Jehue Gordon, and swimmers Shanntol Ince and Dylan Carter have all been nominated for five Spirit of Sport Awards (SOSA) tonight at Queen’s Hall from 6 pm.
Twenty awards will be distributed, as the Ministry of Sport and the Sports Company of T&T (Sportt) honour the country’s top athletes and administrators of 2013. Jehue became a household name in T&T when he won 400m hurdles gold at the World Athletics Championships in Russia, back in August. Jehue clocked 47.69 seconds, edging American Michael Tinsley (47.70) in a photo finish.
Also in August, Carter swam his way to a silver medal in the 50m butterfly event at the FINA Junior World Swimming Championships in Dubai. Carter’s efforts have already been recognised, as he won the Junior Male Athlete of the Year award at the SOSA Nomination ceremony on December 17. In October, Ince made a name for herself at the third Youth Para Pan American Games in Argentina, copping four gold medals. She won the 400m freestyle, 100m backstroke, 100m butterfly and the 100m freestyle. Ince won the Best Athlete with a Disability (physical) award at last year’s SOSA Awards. Also nominated for multiple awards are George Bovell (swimming), Njisane Phillip (cycling), Marisa Dick (gymnastics) and Sunil Narine (cricket).
