Sorrillo wins at Florida InvitationalNewsday :: 20.01.2013MULTIPLE times Central American and Caribbean Games (CAC) medallist, Rondel Sorrillo had a golden start to his 2013 season when he sprinted to victory in the Men’s 55m finals at the Florida Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Florida, on Thursday. Competing unattached, the national sprinter clocked a winning time of 6.21s. Sorrillo defeated silver medallist Shane Crawford (6.34s) of Life Speed and bronze receiver Emmanuel Matadi (6.46s), who also ran unattached. Rounding off the top-five performers were Brian Witherspoon (6.49s) of Life Speed and Davivorn Dowe (6.53s) of the same club respectively. In the preliminary stage, the seventh place 2011 World Championships athlete advanced in a time of 6.19s. This was also the fastest qualifier time in both heats. At the same competition, local track athlete Mikel Thomas bagged bronze in the Men’s 55m hurdles. Also competing unattached, Thomas raced to bronze in a time of 7.24s. Taking top honours was Eddie Lovett (Florida) in 7.10s while Vladimi Vukicevic (Train Gang) grabbed silver in 7.21s. Thomas advanced to the final by clocking the third fastest time in the preliminaries (7.36s). Meanwhile, local runner Jovon Toppin (Florida) had to settle for sixth in the Men’s 400m in 50.05s. Additionally, Akeela Bravo (Jacksonville) also finished in sixth position of the Women’s weight throw with a third round effort of 16.02m. |
